The 2023 Eastern Plains Conference Tournament unfolded on the courts of Greene Central today, witnessing a stellar display of tennis prowess, primarily from the hosts. Greene Central High School (GC) clinched the top spot with a score of 11, trailed by Farmville Central (FC) at 6 and Ayden-Grifton (AG) at 4. Washington (W) and North Pitt (NP) rounded off the scoreboard with 3 and 0 points, respectively.

Anna-Katherine Medlin, a tenacious competitor from Greene Central, was crowned the conference player of the year. Her performance was nothing short of remarkable, sweeping through the singles category with impeccable finesse. She outclassed Emery Linton from Washington in the quarterfinals with a score of 6-0, 6-0, sailed through the semifinals against Kaitlyn Wood from Ayden-Grifton with an identical score, and clinched the championship title by defeating her teammate, Grace Baggett, 6-2, 6-1.

In a significant nod to the emerging talents, Addison Hardee from Ayden-Grifton bagged the title of conference newcomer of the year. On the coaching front, Tim Medlin of Greene Central was honored as the conference coach of the year, a testament to his adept mentoring and the remarkable performance of his team.

The doubles competition saw Rylee Greene and Aubree Smith from Greene Central seizing the championship title, defeating Addie Gibbs and Avery Thomas from Washington with a score of 6-3, 6-1. The duo displayed a synergic gameplay, marking their regional qualifiers status with a commendable 13-2 record.

Regional qualifiers from the tournament have etched their place in the upcoming regional tournament, slated to be held at Greene Central on Friday, October 20th at 1pm. Anna-Katherine Medlin (GC) leads the singles qualifiers with a season record of 20-2, followed by Grace Baggett (GC) at 17-2, Haleigh Long (FC) at 11-5, and Kaitlyn Wood (AG) at 5-9. In the doubles category, aside from Greene and Smith, the pairs of Addie Gibbs/Avery Thomas (W), Lilly Parbst/Maddie Craft (FC), and Emery Hunt/Makayla Horton (AG) have secured their spots for the regional face-off.

The Greene Central teams, under the able guidance of Coach Tim Medlin, have showcased a promising run, setting an upbeat tone as they head into the regional tournament with home court advantage. The Eastern Plains Conference Tournament has indeed been a testament to the blossoming tennis talent in the region, and the stage is set for an enthralling regional competition come October 20th.
