An’Nysha Wooten Reaches 1,000 Career Points, Leads Greene Central with Pride and Purpose

It took 77 games, but on Friday night, An’Nysha Wooten etched her name into Greene Central history.

The senior guard reached the 1,000-point milestone for her career, becoming one of the few players in program history to reach the mark. For Wooten, the moment was less about numbers and more about gratitude.

“It’s an honor to even be one of the people who can hit 1,000 points because that’s something not many people can do,” Wooten said. “So it’s just a blessing to be able to say that I was one of the ones that hit 1,000 points.”

Wooten’s production has been consistent throughout her career. She is averaging 13 points per game, 10.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.4 steals across her four years. As a senior, she has elevated her play even further, averaging 15.3 points, 12 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game while leading Greene Central both on the stat sheet and emotionally.

While the scoring milestone shines, Wooten is quick to credit the teammates around her.

“I wouldn’t have been able to get 1,000 points if it wasn’t for them,” she said. “I lean on them, they lean on me, and we just try to trust each other and play together so we can come out with a win.”

That trust has helped the Rams navigate a season that has included adversity. Injuries have tested the roster, including Wooten herself, but her mindset has remained focused on doing whatever she can to help.

“I try to push through as much as I can,” she said. “But I’ve had to learn that my body comes first and my health comes first. Whenever I get the ability to come back and do at least something to help my team out, I will.”

The milestone also represents four years of perseverance.

“It has been a lot of blood, sweat, and tears,” Wooten said. “It’s not easy trying to work toward 1,000 points. You really have to be dedicated and actually want to push yourself to get to that point. I’m proud that I haven’t given up on myself.”

Wooten’s competitive edge was shaped early. She credits her time playing rec basketball with boys for helping her develop toughness and aggression.

“Being the only girl playing rec basketball with all the boys really put me out there,” she said. “Being tough, staying aggressive, and playing on their level helped me a lot.”

Although known for scoring, Wooten takes pride in being a complete player.

“Being able to pass, shoot, rebound — that’s something every team needs,” she said. “If everybody can’t do it, at least one person needs to do it to encourage others.”

Her leadership extends beyond the court, supported by a family that has been present every step of the way.

“They’re my biggest support group,” Wooten said. “They push me, even when they tell me things I might not want to hear but need to hear.”

On the recruiting front, Wooten currently holds an offer from NC Wesleyan. While reports previously listed her as committed, she clarified her status.

“I just got an offer. I haven’t committed anywhere yet,” she said.

For now, her focus remains with Greene Central.

“I’m just trying to focus on the season and what I can do for the basketball team,” Wooten said.

When asked about leadership, Wooten emphasized accountability and resilience.

“As a leader, I try to lift everyone up,” she said. “We all make mistakes. We can’t get frustrated or put our heads down. We have to keep playing.”

That mindset has carried into conference play. Greene Central is off to a 7-4 start and opened conference action with a dominant 63-20 win over Tarboro.

For Wooten, wearing Greene Central blue carries meaning beyond basketball.

“My whole family came from Greene Central,” she said. “A lot of schools overlook Greene Central. Being able to represent the Rams and put Greene Central out there means a lot to me.”

The points may be counted, but for An’Nysha Wooten, the legacy is still being written.
