Athlete of the Week (Female), Week 1: Lakyn Whitley, North Lenoir

North Lenoir senior Lakyn Whitley set the tone in Week 1 with dominant play at the net, leading the Hawks to a 3-1 start.

The Hawks opened the season Aug. 18 with a sweep of Wilson Hunt as Whitley finished with 14 kills, 8 digs, and 8 service points. In a 3-1 loss the next night, she still produced 12 kills, 5 blocks, 9 service points, and 8 digs to keep North Lenoir competitive.

Whitley responded in emphatic fashion against Greene Central on Aug. 20, posting 16 kills in a convincing 25-13, 25-10, 25-11 victory. Later that day, the Hawks dropped their first match of the season to Pamlico County, 3-1, with set scores of 25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 25-17.

Across the week, Whitley totaled 42 kills, 13 blocks, 17 digs, and 17 service points, cementing herself as the Hawks’ go-to leader to open the year.
