Craig Dawson: A Legacy of Excellence and Leadership

Craig Dawson: A Legacy of Excellence and Leadership

Craig Dawson, a name synonymous with basketball excellence in Kinston, North Carolina, has added another feather to his cap. This past Saturday, Dawson was inducted into the Lenoir County/Kinston Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to a man whose impact on the game continues to resonate.

High School and College Achievements

Dawson's achievements are nothing short of extraordinary. As Kinston High School's all-time leading scorer, he amassed 2,182 points in just three seasons. His high school career was filled with remarkable feats, including scoring 46 points against Goldsboro in 1998 and scoring over 40 points 10 times in his career.

His collegiate career at Wake Forest University was equally impressive. Dawson became the 40th member of the 1,000 point club, led the ACC in three-point field goal percentage in 2002, and set a WFU record for most three-pointers in a season and game.

Transition to Coaching

After a stellar playing career, Dawson transitioned into coaching and is now the coach at Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. In a recent interview with Trey Scott, Dawson opened up about his coaching philosophy, the transition from playing to coaching, and his love for the game.

Dawson described himself as a demanding but fair coach. He emphasized the importance of adapting to different players and situations, stating, "Not everybody's the same, and you can't just be stuck in one way."

Reflecting on his transition to coaching, Dawson said, "I didn't even have a thought process to do that. Injuries kind of got in the way of it, and I just kind of went on and helped coach a middle school team, and then afterwards, the parents came to me and said, 'Hey, we coach our kids in AAU.' I'm like, 'Sure,' and man, I fell in love with it."

A Return to Kinston

Dawson's connection to Kinston remains strong. Last year, he brought his team back to Kinston for the Brandon Ingram event, an experience he described as incredible. Walking the halls of his alma mater and sitting in his old locker room seat brought back cherished memories.

"It was special," Dawson said. "Walking through that tunnel right before the game, coming out as a coach, that was special. It was weird being back over there on that side as a coach, but it was pretty awesome."

A Family Affair

Basketball runs deep in the Dawson family. From his relationship with his uncle Tony Dawson, who played at Florida State, to his connection with younger family members like Josh Dawson, the game has been a unifying force.

Speaking about his family's influence, Dawson said, "Those guys, just embracing me and letting me be a ride-along for the ride, no matter what the question was, get me up at six o'clock to go running on the track with them and playing pick up NBA players and things of that sort, man, you can't imagine that growing up."

Induction into the Hall of Fame

Reflecting on his induction into the Lenoir County/Kinston Hall of Fame, Dawson expressed immense pride and gratitude. He acknowledged the deep and rich tradition of sports in Kinston and what it means to be a part of that legacy.

"People just don't understand what sports means to this town," Dawson said. "For me to be a part of that is life-altering, special, and I don't take it for granted."

Conclusion

Craig Dawson's journey from a high school star to a respected coach is a testament to his dedication, skill, and love for the game. His induction into the Lenoir County/Kinston Hall of Fame is not just a recognition of his individual achievements but a celebration of a man who continues to inspire and lead both on and off the court.

As Dawson continues to shape the lives of young athletes at Woodberry Forest School, his legacy in Kinston remains firmly etched in the hearts of those who witnessed his extraordinary talent. His story is a reminder that excellence is not just about scoring points or breaking records; it's about leadership, mentorship, and leaving a lasting impact on the community.
