Day 2 Recap: FCA Women’s Winter Classic
Day two of the FCA Women’s Winter Classic delivered decisive outcomes, a thrilling semifinal finish, and set the stage for championship Tuesday as teams battled through the consolation and winner’s brackets.
North Duplin 51, South Lenoir 36
North Duplin wasted little time asserting control in the opening game of the day as Day 1 leading scorer Abby Rose scored the first two baskets of the contest.
South Lenoir found itself trailing 13-4 after the first quarter but continued to fight behind Makenzie Herring, Janna Outlaw, and Zarri Cobb. Despite the push, North Duplin carried a 25-10 lead into halftime and extended the margin to 40-22 by the end of the third quarter.
South Lenoir refused to quit, outscoring North Duplin 14-11 in the fourth quarter, but the early deficit proved too much in a 51-36 loss.
Rose finished with 18 points to lead North Duplin, while Lilly Fulgham added 12, Reagce Herring scored nine, and Maggie Brown chipped in seven.
South Lenoir was led by Herring with 11 points, Outlaw with 10, and Cobb with nine. The Blue Devils closed their tournament run with a seventh-place finish.
North Lenoir 42, Greene Central 41
Greene Central and North Lenoir delivered the game of the tournament in a back-and-forth semifinal that came down to the final seconds.
The Rams struck first behind a Jayce Russell and-one and led 9-7 after the first quarter. Greene Central carried a 20-17 lead into halftime before North Lenoir surged in the third quarter behind Ta’Sheena Lynch, who scored 10 points in the period to give the Hawks a 33-28 advantage entering the fourth.
Greene Central clawed back, but Lynch sealed the win with a go-ahead layup with 10 seconds remaining, lifting North Lenoir to a dramatic 42-41 victory.
Lynch finished with a game-high 24 points, while Kenndi Stark and Miracle Samples each added five. Greene Central was led by Janiyah Sutton with 13 points, Azaria Mumford with 12, and Russell with six.
Greene Central will face Farmville Central in the third-place game Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., while North Lenoir advances to the championship game against Kinston at 7:00 p.m.
Kinston 53, Farmville Central 18
Kinston continued its dominant run with a commanding performance against Farmville Central in the nightcap.
After a 6-6 tie at the end of the first quarter, the Vikings took complete control, outscoring Farmville 47-12 over the final three quarters.
Aleah Hill led Kinston with 10 points, while J’Riyanna Edwards and America Lloyd each added nine. Willow Gardner, Ariyona Willis, and Kiarh Pearson scored six points apiece.
Farmville was led by Angel Godard with eight points, while Anyanah Brooks added four.
