Greene Central blanks Goldsboro for second straight shutout

GOLDSBORO— Greene Central kept its hot start rolling Friday night, dominating Goldsboro 55-0 for its second straight shutout.

The Rams (2-0) opened the game with a jolt when Sam Avent returned the opening kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown. Then on the Rams first play of offense, quarterback Josh Cetnar hit Kam Vandiford on a 57-yard strike to make it 14-0 before Goldsboro had even picked up a first down.

From there, Greene Central never looked back.

Cetnar Stays Red-Hot
Cetnar continued his efficient start to the season, completing 5 of 9 passes for 158 yards and 4 touchdowns while adding 42 rushing yards. Coming off a week-one performance where he went 4-for-5 with 86 yards and 4 touchdowns, Cetnar’s first incompletion of the season didn’t come until his ninth attempt — after 8 straight touchdown passes without a miss through two weeks.

Cobb Powers the Ground Game
Dejuan Cobb fueled the rushing attack, scoring three first-half touchdowns: a 17-yard run in the first quarter, an 8-yard score early in the second, and a 65-yard breakaway. Cobb finished with 10 carries for 147 yards and 3 TDs.

It marked the second straight week Cobb played sparingly in the second half after rushing for 130 yards on just five carries last week.

Other Standouts

  • Reggie Sutton: 5 carries, 87 yards

  • JoJo Sanders: 2 carries, 18 yards, 1 TD

  • Sam Avent: 1 catch, 10 yards

  • Kam Vandiford: 2 catches, 125 yards, 2 TDs

  • Jason Wilson: 1 catch, 3 yards, 1 TD

Defensively, the Rams overwhelmed Goldsboro (0-2). Tra Melton anchored the line with 3 sacks and a fumble recovery. Don Ingram and Vandiford each picked off passes, while Nick Avent added a sack and multiple tackles for loss. Jason Wilson chipped in with a half-sack.

The Cougars managed just 32 total yards of offense — 16 rushing on 25 attempts and 16 passing on 2-of-6 with 2 interceptions.

Historical Win
The victory marked Greene Central’s first time posting back-to-back shutouts since 2015 and the first time scoring 50-plus points in consecutive games since 2014. It was also the Rams’ first matchup with Goldsboro since 2016; Greene Central now leads the series 7-2 since 2004.

What They Said
“I am feeling good, I have been working all summer,” Melton said.

“That’s what we wanted to do — come out and show last week wasn’t a fluke,” coach Jay Wilson said. “We want to put points on the board, play good defense, and utilize all of the athletes we have. The outside world will still say we haven’t played anyone, but nothing has been accomplished besides going 2-0 — which we planned to do anyway.”

Craig Whitley credited his teammates: “Parker Riley and Becket have been tremendous. We’ve been sticking to the motto ‘we over me’ and listening to what coach says.”
