Greene Central defense drives 29-8 win at North Pitt

BETHEL — In a matchup of teams looking to rebound from losses, Greene Central used a strong defensive performance and a steady night from quarterback Josh Cetnar to defeat North Pitt 29-8.

Greene Central entered after a loss to Wilson Prep, while North Pitt came in after falling to South Central. The Rams also continued their recent success in the series after winning three of the previous five meetings.

Greene Central got off to a slow start, fumbling on its first possession, but the Rams answered a short time later with a safety and led 2-0 after the first quarter. A few big runs by Cetnar helped the offense settle in during the first half, and Greene Central took a 9-0 lead into halftime.

The Rams extended the lead to 15-0 by the end of the third quarter. North Pitt showed flashes offensively, but costly penalties stalled its progress, and Greene Central’s defense, led by Eatmon and Kaz Farrior, kept the Panthers scoreless until the final eight minutes.

Cetnar finished 9-of-13 passing for 94 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing touchdown. Cody Gaitor carried 12 times for 63 yards and a touchdown, and Trey Bynum had a 23-yard touchdown reception.

Greene Central coach Wilson called it “a great overall performance” and said he was “super excited” and “super happy” with the result.

Coach Whitehurst said the Rams’ week of preparation helped the offense respond after the slow start.

“Not being able to get on the field last week played a part, but having the chance to get on the field this week made all the difference,” Whitehurst said. “After having a heart to heart with the guys this week, it made a difference and it showed.”

Cetnar credited his offensive line after what he described as a needed response.

“At the beginning of the season, I said I wanted to lead, the last few weeks, I felt like I hadn’t done that,” Cetnar said. “So this week I took my role back and tonight, I feel like we played a great game, shoutout to my offensive line.”

Farrior also highlighted his return to the field.

“I got injured at Goldsboro last year, I been out like a year and a half,” Farrior said. “I’m just excited to be back and show everybody I’m back and I’m better.”

May slowed North Pitt’s late momentum with an interception with under four minutes to play, helping Greene Central close out the win.

Greene Central plays at Martin County next. North Pitt hosts West Craven.
