Greene Central Lady Rams Make History With 2–1 Debut in Inaugural Flag Football Season

SNOW HILL — The Greene Central Lady Rams officially opened their first-ever flag football season this past Saturday, playing three straight games and closing the day with a 2–1 record. For a program taking the field for the first time, the debut was filled with historic moments, standout performances, and the type of growth head coach Jay Wilson hoped to see.

“This was our very first football game ever. Most are still learning the plays, the rules, and the game. For them to come out here and fight ‘til the end and lose in overtime — that was absolutely amazing,” Wilson said. “They did a great job, I couldn’t have been more proud of them.”

Game 1: Greene Central vs. North Pitt

The Lady Rams didn’t wait long to make school history.

Freshman linebacker Janiyah Sutton recorded Greene Central’s first sack ever. From there, the defense kept North Pitt off the board as both teams went to halftime tied 0–0.

In the second half, Kiyona “Ki” Williams scored the first touchdown in school history, giving the Lady Rams a 6–0 lead. North Pitt answered to tie the game 6–6 at the end of regulation.

In overtime, North Pitt found the end zone and held on for a 12–6 win, but Greene Central walked away with momentum, energy, and confidence after their first official outing.

Wilson said Sutton is only beginning to show how special she can be. “She’s an athlete. She runs track, plays basketball — she’s going to be one of the best linebackers in the state.”

Game 2: Greene Central vs. Farmville Central

Game two turned into the program’s first breakthrough.

Farmville Central struck first to take a 6–0 lead, but Greene Central responded behind another strong drive capped by Ki Williams’ second touchdown of the day, putting the Lady Rams on top 7–6.

Farmville regained a 12–7 lead before the Rams answered again. Quarterback Ny Wooten found Zara Jones in the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown, securing a thrilling 13–12 win — the first victory in program history.

Final: Greene Central 13, Farmville Central 12

Game 3: Greene Central vs. South Central

Wilson said the progress was noticeable with every snap. “Each game the girls played better and made fewer mistakes.”

In the final game of the day, Jayia Thompson scored to put the Lady Rams ahead 6–0 at halftime. South Central answered late to pull within 7–6, but the Greene Central defense came through when it mattered most.

On the goal line, Daniyah Williams pulled the final flag of the game, securing the Rams’ second win of the day and a 2–1 finish in their inaugural outing.
