Greene Central Turns Walks Into a Statement Win in 16-1 Rout Over Tarboro

Snow Hill — Greene Central didn’t just win Tuesday — the Lady Rams overwhelmed Tarboro with pressure, patience, and speed in a 16-1 rout that showcased exactly how dangerous this lineup can be when it’s clicking.

And this wasn’t a one-off performance — it reflected trends already building within this group.

Greene Central entered the game sitting at 4-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play, already showing the ability to compete within the Eastern Plains 2A/3A. Offensively, the Lady Rams have posted a .321 team batting average, scoring 51 runs on 43 hits through their first stretch of games — but Tuesday proved they don’t need a high hit total to produce runs.

From the opening inning, Greene Central set the tone without even needing contact.

After Tarboro scratched across a run in the top of the first, the Lady Rams answered with a seven-run bottom half — remarkably without recording a hit. Plate discipline became the story early, as Greene Central drew walk after walk and capitalized on every opportunity. An’Nysha Wooten delivered one of the key moments of the inning, working a bases-loaded walk to bring in two runs and swing momentum firmly in the Rams’ favor.

That approach never changed — and Tarboro never recovered.

Greene Central added five more runs in the second, this time mixing in timely contact. Marley Cale delivered the biggest swing of the inning with a two-run double, while Jayce Russell and Sam Martinez each forced in runs after being hit by pitches. Even balls in play created pressure, as Wooten drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.

By the third inning, the outcome was no longer in doubt.

Drew Wells and Wooten each drew bases-loaded walks to tack on runs, and Macy Anderson added another RBI on a groundout as Greene Central extended the lead to 16-1.

While the offense controlled the pace, Anna Grace Tilghman handled the rest in the circle — and her season numbers show why she’s becoming a key piece for Greene Central.

The freshman has logged 32.1 innings this season, allowing 43 hits and 38 runs (12 earned) while striking out 29 batters. On Tuesday, she was dominant, allowing just one hit and one unearned run over 2.2 innings while striking out seven.

At the plate, Tilghman has also been one of the team’s most productive hitters, leading the Lady Rams with a .611 batting average, along with 11 hits and 7 runs scored in limited appearances.

She’s not alone in leading the offense.

Senior Shelby McKeel has been a steady presence near the top of the lineup, hitting .462 with 10 runs scored and 6 hits, while consistently getting on base — something she showcased again Tuesday with three walks. An’Nysha Wooten has added balance with a .375 average and 5 RBIs, and Marley Cale has contributed 3 RBIs and extra-base power, including her double in the second inning.

The Lady Rams’ offensive identity is becoming clear — patience and pressure.

Greene Central drew 13 walks in Tuesday’s game and stole 15 bases, turning every free pass into a scoring opportunity. McKeel and Wells each worked three walks, setting the table all night, while McKeel, Martinez, and Tilghman applied constant pressure on the basepaths with multiple stolen bases.

Tarboro managed just one hit — coming from J. Davis — and played clean defensively, but the Vikings struggled to slow Greene Central’s approach at the plate. Starting pitcher A’Leyah Taylor was charged with 16 runs (14 earned) while facing constant traffic.

With the win, Greene Central not only strengthened its conference position but reinforced what the numbers already suggested — this is a team that can manufacture offense in multiple ways.

The Lady Rams will look to carry that momentum into Friday’s rematch at Tarboro, where their combination of discipline, speed, and emerging production could continue to make them a factor in the Eastern Plains race.
