Herring, Washington power Kinston past Southwest Onslow in second straight win
Kinston continued its strong return to the court Tuesday night, earning its second win in as many nights with a 67–55 victory over Southwest Onslow at home.
The win marked the Vikings’ second game of the season and the second of four games this week, as Kinston works to build momentum after having its start delayed by the football program’s run to the state championship.
Kinston set the tone early, leading 12–10 after the first quarter before extending the margin behind a balanced second quarter. The Vikings scored 14 points in the period, with Jamarion Washington accounting for seven, to take a 26–20 lead into halftime.
The third quarter proved to be the difference. Kinston erupted for 22 points, fueled by Keyshawn Herring, who scored 10 in the period as the Vikings created separation. Southwest Onslow answered with 22 of its own to stay within striking distance, but Kinston maintained control heading into the fourth.
The Vikings closed the game with 19 points in the final quarter to secure the 12-point win.
Herring led Kinston with 22 points, knocking down four three-pointers. Washington followed with 21 points, giving the Vikings a second straight game with two players scoring 20 or more. Jhayeir Koonce finished with 10 points, while Genesis Wiggins added eight. Brennan Chambers scored four points, and Johnterion Cobb chipped in two.
Southwest Onslow was led by Carlos Pagan, who finished with a game-high 25 points. The Stallions scored 10 points in both the first and second quarters, 22 in the third, and 13 in the fourth.
Both teams finished 8-of-14 from the free throw line.
The victory improves Kinston to 2–0 as it heads into a challenging stretch. The Vikings will host J.H. Rose, a 7A program currently 2–1, on Friday night before continuing their busy week.
Southwest Onslow fell to 2–5 with the loss.
