North Lenoir tennis improves to 3-1 with dominant wins over North Pitt, East Carteret
North Lenoir’s boys tennis team pushed its record to 3-1 with a pair of convincing performances, rolling past North Pitt 9-0 and East Carteret 8-1.
The Hawks were especially dominant against North Pitt, sweeping all nine matches and dropping just eight total games across six singles matches and three doubles contests.
Seniors Casey Alston and Maddox Smith continued to set the tone at the top of the lineup. Both remained unbeaten in singles play at 4-0 on the season, while the duo also stayed undefeated together in doubles at 3-0.
Against North Pitt, Alston opened with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Anthony Pena at No. 1 singles, while Smith followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over William Peralta at No. 2. Asher Yarus added a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3, Tyler Carson posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4, Timothy Wiggins took a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 5 and Caleb Espino closed out singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6.
North Lenoir kept control in doubles. Alston and Smith earned an 8-0 shutout at No. 1 doubles, Yarus and Carson won 8-0 at No. 2 and Wiggins and Espino finished off the sweep with an 8-2 victory at No. 3.
The Hawks followed that effort with another strong outing against East Carteret, winning eight of nine matches.
Alston defeated Charlie Morris 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Smith handled Ayush Malhotra 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Carson added a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4, Wiggins won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 5 and Espino earned a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 6.
East Carteret’s lone point came at No. 3 singles, where Angus Murray edged Yarus in a three-set battle, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9).
North Lenoir responded by sweeping doubles once again. Alston and Smith won 8-3 at No. 1, Yarus and Carson pulled out an 8-6 victory at No. 2 and Wiggins and Espino secured an 8-5 win at No. 3.
With the two victories, North Lenoir heads into a challenging non-conference stretch next week against perennial powers Clinton and Greene Central.
