Rams use big third quarter to capture second straight blowout win, 73-42
Coming off a blowout win in their previous game, the Greene Central Rams looked to carry that momentum into their matchup against the Tarboro Vikings. The Rams did just that, earning their second straight dominant victory. A huge third quarter proved to be the difference as Greene Central pulled away for a 73-42 win.
Both teams started slowly on the offensive end, resulting in numerous turnovers and a high number of fast-break opportunities. Tarboro capitalized more efficiently, making fewer mistakes and taking a 14-11 lead into the second quarter.
“We have to match their physicality,” said head coach Blue Edwards. “We want to make sure we exceed their basketball IQ.”
The second quarter opened much like the first, but an altercation quickly increased the intensity for the remainder of the period. The Rams responded by matching the Vikings’ energy and grabbing their first lead of the game. The final four minutes featured back-and-forth action as both offenses found their rhythm. Greene Central carried a narrow 29-27 lead into halftime.
“The biggest adjustment was flying to the basketball and making sure no one had open shots,” Edwards said.
Greene Central dominated the third quarter from the opening inbound, using a decisive run fueled by defense to pull away. The Rams held Tarboro to just five points in the period, as steals and rebounds led to multiple fast-break scores. The surge allowed Greene Central to enter the fourth quarter with a commanding 51-32 advantage.
The Rams continued to build on that lead in the final quarter, with their defense allowing the starters to rest for much of the period. Greene Central closed out the game comfortably to secure its second straight blowout win, 73-42.
“We are playing really good basketball right now,” Edwards said. “When we get to the Kinstons and Farmvilles, we have to raise our level of play even more.”
With the win, Greene Central improved to 12-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Rams are surging at the right time of the season and will look to carry this momentum into next week’s matchup against the Kinston Vikings.
