The 4th Annual Jessica Ramsey Memorial Tournament: Spiking for a Cause

As high school volleyball gears up for another thrilling season, Lenoir Community College (LCC) is set to host the 4th Annual Jessica Ramsey Memorial Tournament on August 12, 2023. This event, much more than a sports competition, carries a heartfelt tribute to a young volleyball enthusiast who left us too soon.

Jessica Ramsey, a South Lenoir Volleyball player and a fan of LCC Volleyball, tragically passed away in 2018 at the tender age of 16. According to Shelly Barnes, the athletic director of Lenoir Community College, "Jessica had taken lessons from Coach David Barnes many times through the years. In honor of her family and in memory of Jessica, the program wanted to start a volleyball tournament for high school teams to raise money for an LCC Volleyball Scholarship in her name."

The tournament will bring together a vibrant mix of regional talent, hosting eight high schools, including South Lenoir High School, Farmville Central High School, Perquimans High School, South Johnston High School, Arendell Parrott Academy, Neuse Charter High School, Richlands High School, and Harnett Central High School.

With a minimal admission fee of $7.00 per person, attendees can enjoy an exciting day of volleyball. The matches kick-off at 9:00 a.m., with two courts concurrently hosting the games. Concessions will be available throughout the day, ensuring a lively atmosphere for both spectators and athletes.

The LCC Volleyball team will manage the event, symbolizing the strong bond Jessica had with the college. Proceeds from the tournament will directly contribute to building a volleyball scholarship in Jessica's memory. The initiative has received significant support from Jessica's family and friends, who have been instrumental in promoting the program and fundraising for the scholarship.

Shelly Barnes adds, "Her family and friends have had t-shirts made, sell concessions at the tournament, and promote the program. It is a real honor and privilege to host this tournament for the family."

Lenoir Community College invites everyone to come out and show their support for this tournament. Attendees will not only enjoy thrilling matches but also contribute to a worthy cause. The college looks forward to welcoming all attendees to this event, which celebrates the spirit of Jessica Ramsey while nurturing the aspirations of future volleyball athletes.
