Walk-off magic keeps South Lenoir unbeaten in statement win over Clinton
South Lenoir continues to find ways to win — and Tuesday night may have been its most telling yet.
In a back-and-forth conference battle against a 7-3 Clinton squad, the Blue Devils delivered when it mattered most, walking off the Dark Horses 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth to move to 6-0 on the season.
With the game tied at three, South Lenoir put together one final push in the ninth. Tanner Jones, who has been one of the team’s most consistent bats early in the season, came through with the biggest swing of the night — a walk-off single that sealed the win.
The performance fits the early-season trend for Jones, who entered the night hitting .429 and continues to deliver in key moments.
South Lenoir finished with 11 hits as a team, continuing what has been a balanced and productive offensive start through six games. Reed Davis, who came in hitting .412 with a team-high seven RBIs, led the charge with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Austin Clements added two hits and drove in two runs, giving the Blue Devils production from the middle of the order.
The depth of the lineup has been a defining strength. Players like Noah Rouse (.400 average entering the game) and Braden Barnett (.417) have consistently set the tone at the top, while contributions throughout the order have made South Lenoir difficult to navigate for opposing pitching staffs.
Clinton answered throughout the night and briefly grabbed control in the seventh inning on a two-run home run from Tyler Hall, taking a 3-1 lead. But South Lenoir responded immediately, tying the game later in the inning and setting the stage for late-game heroics.
On the mound, the Blue Devils got another steady outing from Christian Wooten, who struck out six over 4.1 innings. Barnett took over in relief and delivered a composed performance down the stretch, tossing 4.2 innings while allowing two runs, striking out four, and not issuing a walk.
The ability to respond — both at the plate and on the mound — continues to define this South Lenoir group. Through six games, the Blue Devils have shown they can win in multiple ways, and Tuesday’s walk-off victory over one of the conference’s stronger teams only reinforces that.
