Weekly RPI Update: Week 5
The NCHSAA released its latest Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) standings this week, the system that determines playoff seeding across football, volleyball and soccer. RPI is based on a team’s winning percentage, opponents’ winning percentage, and opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage — and it’s the only factor used when postseason brackets are set.
Here’s where local teams stand as of 9:00 AM, September 18, 2025 (rankings change hourly):
Football
Greene Central (4-0) – The Rams are one of the few remaining unbeatens in 3A football, ranked 13th statewideand 7th in the East with a .608 RPI.
Kinston (2-2) – The Vikings sit at 20th statewide and 11th in the East with a .521 RPI after splitting their first four games.
South Lenoir (3-1) – The Blue Devils are off to a strong start, checking in at 38th statewide and 19th in the East(.433 RPI).
North Lenoir (1-3) – The Hawks hold a .458 RPI, ranked 31st statewide and 10th in the 4A East.
Jones Senior – 1A football RPI standings are not yet released.
Volleyball
North Lenoir (11-1) – The Hawks have been the area’s most dominant team so far, sitting at 10th statewide and 4th in the 4A East with a .639 RPI.
Jones Senior (6-4) – The Trojans are trending as a playoff contender, ranked 15th statewide and 7th in the 1A East (.507 RPI).
Greene Central (8-6) – The Rams sit 32nd statewide and 12th in the 3A East with a .492 RPI.
South Lenoir (2-8) – The Blue Devils check in at 45th statewide and 20th in the East (.412 RPI).
Kinston (0-10) – Still searching for their first win, the Vikings are 53rd statewide and 24th in the East (.341 RPI).
Soccer
Greene Central (2-4-2) – Despite a .500 record, the Rams are strong in the rankings, coming in at 15th statewideand 6th in the 3A East (.547 RPI).
South Lenoir (4-2-2) – The Blue Devils are 25th statewide and 9th in the 3A East with a .500 RPI.
North Lenoir (4-7) – The Hawks check in at 26th statewide and 11th in the 4A East (.493 RPI).
Jones Senior (4-5) – The Trojans sit 20th statewide and 7th in the 1A East with a .408 RPI.
Kinston (0-0) – The Vikings have yet to record a result and currently sit last in the standings at 58th statewide and 24th in the 3A East.
Looking Ahead
With conference play heating up, every result will impact the RPI — and ultimately postseason seeding. Expect plenty of movement in the coming weeks as rivals clash and schedules toughen.
