Greene County Middle continued its strong start to the season Monday, defeating Frink Middle 6-0 to improve to 2-0 on the year. The matchup marked the season opener for the Cavaliers.
The Rams wasted no time seizing control, erupting for five runs in the first inning.
“I was pleased with our play,” Greene County head coach Jacob Baird said. “We jumped out to a hot start with our bats in the first inning, scoring 5 runs with the help of a 2 run home run from Will Taylor.”
Taylor’s two-run shot to right field highlighted the early surge. Luke Anderson, Canaan Crowder and Mason Ellis each added RBI singles in the inning as Greene County built a cushion it would not relinquish.
Frink starter Connor Bryant worked the first three innings on the mound. Bryant allowed five hits and five runs (four earned), while striking out three and walking five across 65 pitches.
The Cavaliers found steadiness when Nick Johnson entered in relief. Johnson was sharp over four innings, allowing just one hit and one unearned run while striking out five without issuing a walk. His effort helped Frink slow Greene County’s momentum after the opening frame.
“A lot of credit to Frink, they made some adjustments and took a lot of the momentum away and held us scoreless until the 6th inning where we scored one more run,” Baird said.
Greene County added its final run in the sixth inning and backed its pitching with clean defense, committing no errors in the field.
Will Taylor earned the win on the mound, tossing four innings of one-hit baseball with five strikeouts and two walks. Nathan Ross closed the game with three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out six as the Rams combined for 11 strikeouts.
“Defensively I thought we were solid, our pitching looked pretty good,” Baird said. “Overall a good early season competition to work on going further!”
Mason Ellis led Greene County from the leadoff spot, finishing with two hits and two runs scored. Taylor drove in two runs in the victory.
For Frink, Jesus Aguilar-Rubio and Connor Sutton recorded the Cavaliers’ only two hits of the game.
