Frink blanks Woodington to capture conference championship
WOODINGTON — Frink Cavalier baseball is back on top of the conference mountain.
Behind a dominant shutout from Connor Sutton and a 12-hit offensive performance, Frink defeated Woodington Raiders 7-0 on Thursday at Woodington Middle School to secure its first conference championship in several years.
Sutton controlled the game from the opening inning, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just four hits across seven innings. The Frink right-hander struck out four and walked two in the championship-clinching victory.
Frink wasted little time taking control offensively.
The Cavaliers pushed across four runs in the top of the first inning after Cooper Parks drew a walk, Williams reached, Smith put the ball in play, and Bryant delivered a sacrifice fly as Frink capitalized on early opportunities.
The Cavaliers added two more runs in the second inning behind RBI singles from Williams and Smith before adding another insurance run later in the game.
Bryce Harrison led the offensive attack with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, while Jesus Aguilar-Rubio also collected three hits. Sutton and Williams added two hits each as Frink finished with 12 hits as a team.
Smith drove in two runs for the Cavaliers, while Harrison swiped three bases.
Woodington struggled to generate offense against Sutton, though Jackson Taylor provided a bright spot for the Raiders with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate.
Axel Ard started on the mound for Woodington, allowing six runs on six hits over two innings while striking out one. Landen Coples provided solid relief work, tossing five innings with five strikeouts.
Despite the loss, the Raiders continued battling defensively after the difficult opening innings, with Coples helping stabilize the game on the mound.
For Frink, the victory represented more than just another win. After several years without a conference title, the Cavaliers completed their climb back to the top behind timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and a shutdown effort from Sutton on the mound.
