Frink Middle School softball didn’t just win a conference championship — they reinforced a standard that has quietly become the expectation.

Despite navigating three different coaches in three years, the program has continued to thrive. Under head coach Stony Wine, this year’s eighth-grade group delivered a dominant finish, securing its third straight conference title while completing a second consecutive undefeated season.

“Despite having 3 different coaches over 3 years, the Frink softball program has established a standard of excellence on the softball diamond over the last few years,” Wine said. “This 8th grade group has been conference champions three straight years, with the last 2 years being undefeated overall. These girls have done well academically and have really developed into role models for their peers.”

At the center of that success is a roster loaded with production and balance.

Kenzie Carson anchored the team in the circle, putting together a remarkable season. She faced 201 batters across 53 innings, allowing just 15 hits while striking out 119 hitters — 71 swinging and 48 looking — finishing with an unblemished 11-0 record.

Her dominance is nothing new. Over her middle school career, Carson compiled a 27-2 record with 302 strikeouts in 133 innings, while surrendering just 36 hits.

Offensively, Frink’s lineup overwhelmed opponents from top to bottom.

Carson and shortstop Savannah Jernigan both hit over .700 this season, setting the tone at the plate. Catcher Leah Wine followed closely, batting over .675, while first baseman Ariel Carter added power and consistency with an average above .550.

The defensive unit matched that production with steady play across the field. The infield featured Carter at first, Abigail Almanza at second, Jernigan at shortstop, and Alana Davis at third. Behind the plate, Wine handled pitching duties, while the outfield group of Viya Gooding, Claire Jernigan, MJ Slaughter, Layla Jarmen, Kaylin Jarman, and Abrianna Mercer provided depth and range.

It’s that combination — elite pitching, relentless hitting, and consistent defense — that allowed Frink to separate itself not just this season, but over a three-year stretch that has defined this group.

More importantly, as Wine emphasized, the impact has extended beyond wins and losses.

“These girls have done well academically and have really developed into role models for their peers,” he said.

With this eighth-grade class now moving on, Frink softball sends off a group that didn’t just win — they set the bar for what comes next.
