GCMS Advances to Division 2 Championship with 45-30 Win Over Ayden

Greene County Middle School is headed to the Division 2 Pitt County Championship after a physical 45-30 win over Ayden in the opening round of the playoffs.

GCMS controlled the tempo and responded every time the game tightened up, building a double-digit lead in the second quarter and never looking back.

Leading scorers for GCMS:

  • Kyler Davis – 11 points

  • Josiah Joyner – 9 points

  • Jayden Barnes – 9 points

  • Nathan Ross – 8 points

Eighth-grade shooting guard Kyler Davis delivered one of the biggest stretches of the night, knocking down two crucial back-to-back three-pointers in the second quarter to push the lead to 10.

When injury forced a lineup adjustment, seventh-grade point guard Andre Jones stepped in and handled the moment.

Head coach Steven Criste praised his team’s toughness afterward.

“It was a tough physical game, the boys answered though showing grit. When 7th grade PG Andre Jones had to step in due to an injury he didn’t disappoint. 8th grade SG Kyler Davis also stepped up big time hitting 2 crucial back to back 3’s in the second quarter to take a 10 point lead and they never looked back,” Criste said.

GCMS will now face Chicod in the Division 2 Championship on Wednesday, February 11.
