Cold Shooting Night Costs Greene Central in 74-47 Loss to Unbeaten Farmville Central

Greene Central’s shooting struggles proved costly Tuesday night, but for a while, the Rams were right there.

The Rams fell 74-47 at home to conference rival Farmville Central, dropping the season series and slipping to 12-8 overall and 4-3 in league play. The final margin widened late, but the game was competitive through the first half before the undefeated Jaguars gradually pulled away.

Greene Central matched Farmville Central point for point in the opening quarter, battling to an 11-11 tie after eight minutes. The Rams defended well early and avoided letting the Jaguars establish quick separation.

The turning point began in the second quarter.

Farmville Central outscored Greene 21-10 in the period, turning a tie game into a 32-21 halftime deficit. The Rams struggled to generate consistent offense during that stretch, missing perimeter looks and having difficulty finishing possessions.

Still, Greene Central had chances coming out of the break.

The Rams trimmed into the margin at times in the third quarter, but Farmville answered each push and extended its lead to 51-33 entering the fourth. The Jaguars then closed strong, outscoring Greene 23-14 in the final period to seal the 27-point win.

Farmville Central, now 21-0 and still unbeaten atop the conference standings, showed why it holds the top spot. Greene Central, meanwhile, never found consistent rhythm on the offensive end — especially without its leading player DJ Williams, who was out preparing for the indoor state championship.

The numbers reflect the challenge.

The Rams shot just 17-of-52 from the field (33 percent) and 5-of-22 from three-point range (23 percent). They were more efficient inside the arc (12-of-30, 40 percent), but struggled to convert clean perimeter opportunities and had difficulty sustaining scoring runs. Greene Central also committed 20 turnovers, which Farmville capitalized on during key second- and third-quarter stretches.

Trey Bynum led the Rams with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-3 at the free throw line, while adding seven rebounds. Nick Avent was efficient, finishing with 11 points on a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and grabbing four rebounds. Dejuan Beamon added eight points, knocking down two three-pointers.

Josh Cetnar contributed seven points and four rebounds, and Sam Avent added seven points, but Greene Central struggled to find offensive balance throughout the night. The Rams recorded just seven assists on 17 made field goals, another indicator of how difficult consistent half-court offense was against Farmville’s pressure and defensive intensity.

With the loss, Greene Central remains in third place in conference play as the regular season winds down.

The Rams will look to regroup quickly as they host Beddingfield on February 13 before closing out the regular season next week against Kinston and Ayden-Grifton — two important matchups that could impact postseason positioning.

For three quarters, Greene Central competed. But against an undefeated rival, extended scoring droughts and missed opportunities proved too much to overcome.
