Lady Rams Hold Off Farmville Central, Sweep Conference Series in 47-44 Thriller
In a packed gym with postseason energy already in the air, Greene Central delivered one of its most important wins of the season.
The Lady Rams edged conference rival Farmville Central 47-44 in a tight, intense battle, completing the season sweep and extending their winning streak to four games. The victory moves Greene Central to 13-7 overall and 6-1 in conference play — sitting just behind 7-0 Kinston in the standings.
It wasn’t a night defined by offensive rhythm. It was defined by toughness.
Greene Central shot 17-of-53 from the floor (32 percent) and just 2-of-14 from three-point range (14 percent). But what the Lady Rams lacked in efficiency, they made up for with defense, rebounding, and grit down the stretch.
The fourth quarter belonged to Greene Central. Clinging to a narrow lead, the Lady Rams outscored Farmville Central 14-12 over the final eight minutes to secure the three-point win. After leading 16-9 at the end of the first quarter, Greene Central weathered a second-quarter push before regaining control late.
An’Nysha Wooten led the way with 17 points, attacking inside and converting key free throws. She finished 6-of-12 from two-point range and 5-of-8 at the line while pulling down seven rebounds and adding three assists.
Azaria Mumford added 10 points, knocking down a three-pointer and going 3-of-7 inside the arc. Janiyah Sutton contributed eight points and four rebounds, while Jayce Russell provided five points and a team-high six rebounds.
The Lady Rams dominated the glass, outrebounding Farmville Central 23-? (21 defensive rebounds and 2 offensive rebounds reflected in team totals), limiting second-chance opportunities and forcing difficult looks. Greene Central also recorded eight steals and eight blocks, disrupting Farmville’s rhythm throughout the night.
Free throws proved pivotal. Greene Central went 11-of-24 from the line (46 percent), and while the percentage leaves room for improvement, several of those makes came in critical late-game moments.
The opening quarter set the tone. Greene Central jumped ahead 16-9, feeding off the energy of the home crowd. Farmville trimmed the lead with a 12-point second quarter, but the Lady Rams never allowed the game to fully slip away.
Now winners of four straight, Greene Central continues to build momentum at the right time.
The Lady Rams return to action February 13 against Beddingfield before closing the regular season next week with matchups against Kinston and Ayden-Grifton — games that could ultimately shape the conference race.
For now, though, the message was clear inside a roaring home gym: Greene Central is finding ways to win, even when the shots don’t fall easily.
