Greene Central Girls Capture EPC Track Championship; Boys Secure 3rd Place

Greene Central’s track teams emerged with a excellent performance at the recent Eastern Plains Conference Championships, hosted at Greene Central High School. The event, which saw intense competition, concluded with Greene Central’s girls’ team clinching the conference championship, amassing a total of 103 points. The Greene Central boys’ team took 3rd place as whole but had several first place winners.

The girls' victory was complemented by an outstanding achievement from Coach Mattocks, who was honored as the Female Coach of the Year, underlining her exceptional leadership and the team's hard work.

Noteworthy Performances

Among the standout athletes was DJ Williams, who was named the Boys Field Athlete of the Year. Williams showcased his exceptional skills by securing gold in both the high jump and triple jump, with impressive marks of 6’4’’ and 41’10’’ respectively. He also earned a silver in the long jump, recording a mark of 19’4’’.

Marshayla, crowned the Female Field Athlete of the Year, dominated in the throwing events. She claimed gold in the shot put and discus with throws of 34-3 and 101-6, showcasing her strength and technique.

Dejuan Cobb made notable contributions by winning the conference championship in the long jump with a leap of 20’3’’ and grabbing a silver in the triple jump with a distance of 40’4’’.

Additional commendable performances included Vandiford, who took bronze in the 100 meters with a time of 11.53; the 4x100 relay team, which captured a silver medal; TJ Wilcox, who secured a silver in the 800 meters with a time of 43.82; and Jaylen Chavis, who earned a bronze in the shot put with a throw of 44-5.5.

Looking Ahead

With the regional meet scheduled for May 10th at Kinston High School, Greene Central’s athletes are now preparing to build on their successes. The team aims to carry forward their momentum and continue showcasing their athletic excellence on a larger stage.

As they advance, Greene Central's athletes remain focused on achieving new personal bests and adding more accolades to their already impressive season.
