Greene Central, Kinston Show Key Strengths at Havelock Jamboree
The Havelock Jamboree served as a preseason measuring stick for Greene Central and Kinston, offering both programs a chance to test themselves against quality opposition before the season kicks off.
Kinston vs. Havelock
Kinston entered knowing it would face one of the toughest defensive units in Eastern North Carolina. Havelock’s front seven brought constant pressure, but senior quarterback Tyler Jones stayed composed, connecting five times with NC State commit Tyreek Copper, including a short touchdown.
Most of Copper’s damage came on quick routes, as deep opportunities were limited. Senior running back Genesis Wiggins added a spark with several explosive runs that tested the edges.
While protection breakdowns slowed the Vikings’ offense at times, the composure of Jones and the playmaking ability of Copper and Wiggins were positives Kinston can carry into 3A competition. Overall I think Havelock “won” the scrimmage but Kinston was gaining momentum towards the end of the scrimmage.
Greene Central vs. White Oak
Greene Central made an early statement when senior running back Dejuan Cobb broke free for a 70-yard touchdown on the opening drive. Behind an offensive line anchored by Craig Whitely, the Rams controlled the line of scrimmage and produced consistent gains on the ground.
Quarterback Josh Cetnar extended plays with his legs and found 6-foot-4, 245-pound tight end Jason Wilson for a red-zone score. Wilson had a very solid day hauling in three catches including the score. While the deep passing game will still be a work in progress, Cetnar’s mobility and short-game efficiency stood out.
Defensively, linebacker Chris Dildy set the tone, delivering multiple stops behind the line of scrimmage and bringing energy on every snap. Overall, I felt like Greene Central suprised White Oak and dominated the first half of the scrimmage. White Oak did start putting some drives together towards the end of the scrimmage, GC offense was fluid throughout.
Takeaways
For Kinston, keeping Jones upright will be a key to unlocking their full potential, but the skill talent is already in place. Greene Central’s offensive line depth and variety of backfield options give them a reliable foundation heading into the regular season. Defense for both schools looked really good.
