Greene Central notches first win, sweeps North Pitt at home

SNOW HILL — Greene Central’s volleyball team picked up its first win of the season Tuesday night, sweeping North Pitt in straight sets and bouncing back quickly from a tough loss less than 24 hours earlier.

The Rams (1-1) were coming off Monday’s five-set season opener, where they dropped the final three sets after winning the first two. This time, the response was exactly what head coach Emily Lahr wanted to see.

“We came off a loss yesterday. The girls were just getting used to playing together in a competitive setting,” Lahr said. “We watched a lot of film today. I am super excited how they adjusted — they did exactly what they needed to do. I have a really deep bench this year, which is abnormal for us. We usually have a few subs, but I was able to use all the girls on the court to give breaks. They stayed warm the entire game and gave people a lot of time to relax and reset.”

That depth also gave Lahr the flexibility to move players into new roles.

“We had the plan from last year for bringing girls up from JV,” Lahr said. “When they made the transition, it was easy to put them into a position like Jaycee. She is typically an outside or DS, but she was able to go up the middle and capitalize.”

With the win, Greene Central extended a unique streak — for the fifth straight year, the Rams have won their home opener in Snow Hill.

Last season, Greene Central finished 12-13 overall and placed fifth in a competitive Eastern Plains Conference.

The Rams will try to carry the momentum into Thursday night’s home match against county rival North Lenoir. In the battle for Browntown.
