Kinston Wingmen name-change down to four names

The Kinston Wingmen, a team that has quickly become a beloved part of the local sports scene, are giving their fans a chance to make history. The team has announced the four finalists in their "Rename the Team" competition, a contest that has sparked excitement and engagement throughout the community.

The four potential new names, listed in alphabetical order, are the Cardinals, Ironclads, Loch Neuse Monsters, and Wingmen. The names reflect various aspects of Kinston and Lenoir County's rich history and culture, from the local wildlife to the area's storied past.

The competition is part of the team's ongoing commitment to fostering a strong connection with the local community. The Wingmen, who are part of the Old North State League, a collegiate wood bat summer league, have been playing their inaugural season at Lancer Field, the home of the Lenoir Community College Lancers. The team's roster includes local talent from Lenoir County, Lenoir Community College, and many different other locations further strengthening the bond between the team and the community.

The team's General Manager, Billy Stern, has been instrumental in organizing the competition. Stern has emphasized the importance of the team's connection to the local community, stating earlier this season, "We aren’t just passing through. We are here to build something they can be proud of and get behind."

Fans can vote for their favorite team name in two ways. First, they can cast their vote as they purchase their tickets on game day or as they are scanned in with pre-purchased tickets. Second, throughout the month, Stern will visit different businesses around Lenoir County and set up voting booths. The locations of these booths will be posted so fans can vote at these locations. There will be no online voting.

The winning name will be announced during the 7th inning stretch of the Wingmen's final home game on July 21st. This exciting event promises to be a highlight of the season, as fans eagerly anticipate the unveiling of the new team name. Regardless of the outcome, one thing is certain: the team formerly known as the Wingmen will continue to make their mark on the field and in the hearts of their fans.
