Weekly RPI Update: Week 4

Weekly RPI Update: North Lenoir, South Lenoir, Jones Senior, Greene Central, and Kinston

The NCHSAA released its latest Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) standings this week, which determine playoff seeding across football, volleyball and soccer. RPI is calculated by a team’s winning percentage, its opponents’ winning percentage, and its opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage. Importantly, RPI is the only factor used to seed postseason brackets.

Here’s where local schools stand as the fall season moves forward:

Volleyball

  • Greene Central (5-5) – The Rams sit at .482 RPI, ranked 31st statewide and 13th in the 3A East.

  • South Lenoir (2-5) – The Blue Devils hold a .431 RPI, ranked 49th in the state and 20th in the 3A East.

  • Kinston (0-7) – The Vikings are still looking for their first win, ranked 53rd statewide and 24th in the 3A Eastwith a .339 RPI.

  • North Lenoir (7-1) – The Hawks have surged early, carrying a .604 RPI that places them 16th statewide and 4th in the 4A East.

  • Jones Senior (5-2) – 1A RPI rankings have not been released yet, but the Trojans are considered a top contender in the 1A East at this point in the season.

Soccer

  • Jones Senior (2-5) – The Trojans are 30th statewide and 10th in the 1A East with a .241 RPI.

  • Greene Central (2-2-2) – The Rams are off to a strong start, ranked 3rd statewide and 2nd in the 3A East with a .617 RPI.

  • South Lenoir (3-1) – The Blue Devils also sit near the top, ranked 7th in the state and 4th in the 3A East with a .607 RPI.

  • North Lenoir (3-6) – The Hawks stand at .412 RPI, ranking 37th in the state and 12th in the 4A East.

Football

  • Kinston (2-1) – The Vikings boast a .689 RPI, ranked 4th in the state and No. 1 in the 3A East.

  • Greene Central (3-0) – The Rams are undefeated, sitting at .622 RPI, ranked 14th statewide and 8th in the 3A East.

  • South Lenoir (2-1) – The Blue Devils are 37th in the state and 18th in the 3A East with a .400 RPI.

  • North Lenoir (1-2) – The Hawks carry a .511 RPI, ranking 28th statewide and 8th in the 4A East.

Looking Ahead

With RPI serving as the only factor in playoff seeding, every win and loss from this point forward could swing postseason positioning. Expect movement in the standings as conference play continues to heat up across the area.
