Stellar Bench Play Leads to Rams’ Dominant Win Over Bruins, 75-36
The Greene Central Rams, fresh off a heartbreaking loss, looked to build momentum against the Beddingfield Bruins. The Rams were able to lean on their bench in the matchup, leading to a landslide 75-36 victory over the Bruins.
It was a back-and-forth first quarter, with both teams trading baskets for most of the period. Each team came out hot from three-point range, but the Rams capitalized on turnovers by the Bruins to build a small lead. Greene Central headed into the second quarter with a 17-12 advantage.
“We had some competitive practices the last couple of days,” said head coach Blue Edwards. “That let me know the guys coming off the bench were ready to go, and those guys off the bench got extended minutes.”
The competitive spirit shown in practice carried over against Beddingfield. The Rams’ bench unit entered midway through the second quarter and would not sit until halftime. Greene Central controlled the tempo during that stretch, using aggressive defense and fast-break points to close the half on a 15-3 run. The surge sent the Rams into halftime with a comfortable 35-15 lead.
“We made a number of adjustments,” Edwards said. “One thing I wanted was pressure defensively and to move the ball around on offense.”
The Rams delivered on their coach’s message. With the starters feeding off the momentum gained by the bench unit, Greene Central turned up the intensity on defense. That effort led to multiple fast-break opportunities, where ball movement created open layups. The Rams continued to grow the lead, heading into the final quarter up 54-27.
“It should do a lot to build our chemistry and get our confidence up,” Edwards said.
The final quarter was left to the bench, which continued its stellar play. Much like the second quarter, the unit dominated the Bruins, allowing Greene Central to secure a decisive 75-36 victory heading into the most important stretch of the season.
Four Rams scored 11 points each in an all-around team performance. The win improves Greene Central to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Rams will face the Tarboro Vikings tomorrow as they fight for a playoff berth to close out the season.
