The Rams Sweep Regional Tennis Titles; Hawks Secured Third in Doubles

Greene Central High School and North Lenoir High School both made a strong showing at the NCHSAA 2A East Regional Men's Tennis Championships, with Greene Central winning both singles and doubles titles, and North Lenoir securing third place in doubles.

Greene Central junior William Drake dominated the singles competition, winning his second straight regional championship by defeating Manteo's Cole Walker 6-1, 6-1. In the doubles championship, Greene Central freshmen Sam Avent and Nick Avent upset top-seeded seniors Avery Davis and Chance Davis of North Johnston, with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 victory.

GC Coach Tim Medlin expressed his pride in the young players' growth and dedication, saying, "William has dedicated so much time to his education and tennis, and all the hard work showed in a dominating fashion this weekend. The Avent brothers have just steadily improved as they trusted their coaching and learned to manage the emotions and pressures of high-level varsity tennis."

North Lenoir's doubles team of Casey Alston and Austin Williams finished third at the regional tournament, defeating Eastern Wayne 6-2, 6-3. Their strong performance earned them a spot in the state tournament next weekend in Holly Springs.

“Proud of our effort and determination throughout weekend.  Fell to a tough senior laden north Johnston teams that was the tournaments number one seed,” NL coach Scott Alston said. ”Our guys have had a great season and to make the state tournament a great accomplishment!”

As both Greene Central and North Lenoir head into the state tournament, both local squads are looking to make big noise statewide.
