The South Lenoir volleyball team saved one of its best performances of the season for when it mattered most. The 19th-seeded Blue Devils pulled off a first-round upset over No. 14 Greene Central, winning in straight sets 25-20, 25-18, 25-21 on the road Thursday to advance in the NCHSAA 2A state playoffs.
The South Lenoir Blue Devils (3–5) came out swinging on homecoming night, driving deep into Pender territory on their opening possession. But a pair of costly penalties stalled the drive — and that moment summed up much of the evening as the undefeated Pender Patriots (8–0) pulled away for a 44–12 victory Friday in Deep Run.

Greene Central placed second at the Eastern Plains Conference Championship with three All-Conference runners — Colby Kaminski, Jan Carlos Morales, and Clayton Little — while Kinston’s Jy’Re Rouse finished third overall to earn All-Conference honors.
Greene County Middle edged Chicod 14-6 in overtime behind two rushing touchdowns from Nathan Ross and a strong defensive effort that held Chicod to 40 yards. The Rams move to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play heading into next week’s playoffs.
The South Lenoir cross country program continued its run of dominance at the conference championships, with the varsity boys capturing their 14th consecutive team title and the girls finishing third overall.

In a rivalry game packed with emotion, lead changes, and late heroics, Kinston found a way to survive. The Vikings erased a 12-point halftime deficit and outlasted Greene Central 32-31 in a Friday night thriller that featured five touchdowns in the final quarter alone.

Greene Central fell to Farmville Central in straight sets but showed grit and growth ahead of Thursday’s regular-season finale at Beddingfield, where a win would secure third place heading into the playoffs.
North Lenoir clinched the Three Rivers 4A Conference title with a sweep over Washington, extending its win streak to 14 matches and 39 straight sets while climbing to 3rd in the East RPI rankings.
Greene Central sophomore cross country runner Colby Kaminski is the Neuse News Male Athlete of the Week after finishing fifth at his home meet with a personal best time of 19:39. His coach praised Kaminski’s improvement and leadership, noting he’s made great strides each week heading into the conference championship.
Kinston High’s Diara Gooding is the Neuse News Female Athlete of the Week after helping the Vikings snap a 43-match losing streak with a 3-0 sweep over Tarboro. The sophomore libero/setter totaled 22 digs, eight assists, and eight aces as Kinston earned its first win since 2022 and first straight-set victory since 2019.
